A weeklong writing workshop for students who are entering grades 11 or 12.

Are you a sports fan? Capture your love of sports in the way you write. Our writing coaches will teach you skills for writing sports–related fiction and nonfiction. You’ll also learn how to use writing to connect with athletes, better understand sports psychology, and illustrate the intensity of the game to your audience. Keep your writing at the top of its game!

This camp is specifically designed  for youth entering 8th-12th grade.

<p>What is HTML? It’s a special language we use to tell computers how to build web pages. Teens will have a chance to take a look at the language of websites and learn how to remix HTML tags to reinvent and make pages of their own. Activities include a mix of programming in the lab and outdoor activities. By the end of camp students will have the tools to build a website and can share it with their friends.</p>

Write Time, Write Now!

A weeklong writing workshop for students who are entering grades 5–6.

Do you ever wonder how authors come up with their ideas? It turns out your ideas, questions and experiences can be close to theirs. At this camp you’ll learn how to find the sources to inspire your writing. Madeleine L’Engle, author of A Wrinkle in Time, will be our “mentor” during this week of writing. Her life experiences, personal questions and passionate interests inspired her writing–and you’ll learn how to find your inspiration. The time to write is now!

Creative Writing

A 2-week long writing workshop for students who are entering 10th-12th grade.

Master the craft of writing by opening up your writer’s toolbox this summer. This camp for older teens will teach you the skills you need to become a better creative writer of poetry, essays, blogs, memoirs and short stories. You’ll learn how to build ideas and characters, write dialogue, revise and edit your work, and get your writing published.

Morning

What happens when young writers use the great outdoors for inspiration? Explore the BYU campus as we discover the sights, smells and sounds of summer! Combining the elements of art and writing, students will create a memorable masterpiece. This camp is for those who like to feel the sun on their face and grass under their feet!

Afternoon

This is a continuation of the Nature of Writing morning session. Students will delve further into the world of nature as they focus on either their morning experiences or other student interests. The world of writing combined with the natural elements awaits!

Cost: $160 morning or afternoon only/$225 full day

The route to becoming a successful author isn’t the same for everyone. Come learn about the different paths you can take on your writing journey. Spend the mornings observing professional writers in the fields of broadcasting, journalism, comedy writing, screenplay writing, etc. In the afternoons you’ll have guided writing time to get the creative juices flowing as you dive into the different genres. Please note: this experience is not only for students who wish to write professionally.

Self–discovery can take your writing to a whole new level. This camp for teenage writers will help you find which types of writing you most enjoy and what techniques to use to improve your writing. You’ll enjoy a walk–and–write, a seminar with a guest author, interacting with fellow writers, and daily personal writing time. If you love to write, this is your camp.

KAPOW! BAM! Want to write a graphic novel? Create a world where super heroes and villains reign. As we help you focus on character development and storytelling you will create five pages of a graphic novel or comic book. You’ll meet other students who share your interests and help each other improve your technique. Best of all, professional writers and illustrators will join us throughout the week to give their insights and expertise.

Write Before Your Eyes: Writing Flash Fiction

This workshop is designed for youth entering grades 9-12.

A picture is worth a thousand words. In flash fiction a thousand words is all you have. Learn how to write vibrant, convincing, and concise stories. Read examples of flash fiction, and tap your creativity through free–writing exercises. You’ll also learn professional photography techniques. At the end of the camp your photo/flash fiction masterpiece will go into the group anthology—and your flash fiction story will be submitted to the website “365 Tomorrows” for possible publication.

Exploring Art Through Writing

This camp is specifically designed  for youth entering 5th– 9th grade.

Discover art in ways you never have before! We will delve into exciting natural and man-made art forms during this camp. Using writing and basic sketching as a method of discovery, students will explore the nature, history, and beauty of traditional and modern art. Supplies and daily snacks are included in the registration fee. Come and enjoy the last days of summer while warming up your brain for the first days of school!
